Wine News & Notes, May '08

The calendar says spring but it doesn't quite feel that way...yet. Perhaps if we each raise a glass of rosé, we can hasten the arrival of the warmer weather. If it doesn't work, we've still had a nice glass of wine anyway. We're currently selecting the best rosés of Italy, Spain, Croatia, and France, including, of course, Provence. While the 2007s are starting to arrive, many of the 2006 rosés are available today, nicely discounted and still drink wonderfully.

Many of our tastings this month are actually spirits, not wines. The "Green Fairy" returns to America in the form of French absinthe. Yes, it's the real deal, with the wormwood and everything. It makes for a truly delicious and one-of-a-kind cocktail. Transitioning from one kind of green beverage to another: the green movement has infiltrated the spirits industry. Puris vodka is not only made from organically grown Italian wheat, the bottle is made from recycled glass, the label is bamboo instead of paper, the ink on the label is soy, not ink and the cork is harvested from sustainable cork farms. Oh, and by the way, the vodka is delicious! Finally, gin drinkers rejoice! America has finally created premium gin. One of them, Bluecoat, will be available to taste this month.

See you at the tastings!
